Good news for those going on the Wheels for the World September 22-24, 2023 C&O Canal ride...we have set the starting (pick-up) location to be near Dulles Airport (IAD), which solves the problem of out-of-reach pre-ride and post-ride lodging cost near DC.

You will have a choice of brands (at various prices under, and a little over, $100/night), that include Holiday Inn (best rate), TownPlace suites (a Marriott Brand), and Hampton Inn (a Hilton brand), so you can pick your hotel based on brand affiliation for points, reserve your stay with points, or pick for price.

All three hotels are within a block of each other.

We will plan to have a pre-ride Happy Hour at the O'Malley's Pub (at Holiday Inn), Thursday evening [I am looking for a sponsor for this event], and each of the hotels offers breakfast in the morning for those who stay.

I will have the proposal and contract for a block of rooms across the three hotels, with pricing and registration links on Tuesday, so you can reserve.

You will only be about 10 minutes from Dulles airport, and flying in to there is simplest logistics -- these hotels each have an airport shuttle for easy transport.

If you are driving to the hotel and staying, that will be easy too, as we have worked out an arrangement for your car to remain at the hotel during the ride, which if not free, will be near so, eliminating the high parking cost near DC.

For those driving to the hotel and parking, but not staying, we anticipate a reasonable rate parking, to accommodate our trips success.

Finally, if you are flying to Reagan Airport (DCA) because it's cheaper, that's OK too. The Metro Silver Line now connects Dulles and Reagan airports, and you can ride it out. Even those staying at the Dulles area hotels can Metro in to DC for the day before the ride, or after, to sightsee.

My recommendation for an early arrival or late stay activity, is to visit the National Air and Space Museum's Udvar-Hazy Annex just south of Dulles Airport, to see early aircraft to the England Gay, U2, Concorde, and space shuttle Discovery, as well as watch an I-MAX movie.

You could also bike on the nearby W&OD trail, to one of the trailside micro-breweries (8, 20, or 26 miles round-trip), or restaurants in Herndon (8), Ashburn (16), Leesburg (28), DC (44), or Purcellville (54)

At the end of the trip, we will return riders and bikes to the Dulles hotels. Note: If we have a huge group, some riders may need to Metro to Dulles for pick-up.

We do not expect an after party/dinner this year. The happy hour to acquaint, and the last night's dinner (also looking for a sponsor) will be the main events.

Sam learned to ride today. It took about 30 minutes. He is now on a "date" with my wife, riding around the neighborhood, practicing shifting, braking, and balance. I love these days.

To complement our high end, all carbon Trek Boone 7 gravel (CX) bikes, we have our first moderate priced gravel bike option. This 56 cm Specialized Tri-Cross, will fit 5'9" - 6'1" range riders, and offers wider tire clearance, with a 3x8 drivetrain.

We continue to provide bike inspectors to ensure the bikes are safe to be donated, when a corporate team building event is executed at Salamander Resort and Conference Center, in Middleburg, VA.

This group built six bikes for donation through the YMCA, on Thursday, 8/5, and another builds a bunch on Monday, 8/9.

Get Out and Go Tours is pleased to announce that we are the tour logistics ex*****on partner to the Hemophilia Foundation of America, to support the 2021 HFA National Bike Ride for the eleventh time!

The 2021 tour will be September 17-19, on the C&O Canal and this year, because the Paw Paw tunnel is expected to be closed, we are starting in DC, and riding to Harpers Ferry, WV the first day (62 miles /100 km), and back the third day (62 mi / 100 km). The middle day offers three options for the first time:

1. A ride west on the trail to Taylor's Landing, then return through Antietam Battlefield, and the Canal, for 41 miles of riding.

2. A hike to the top of Maryland Heights, to overlook Harpers Ferry, about 6 miles, round trip.

3. A rest day, for walking around Harpers Ferry on your own or just lounging around the hotel.

We will use the same hotel both nights, and we don't spend two hours on a bus -- more time for socializing, camaraderie, and happy hour!

Most of the trail we will ride is recently resurfaced, smooth, fast crushed stone.

We love it when a customer tells us, "my kids have never ridden a bike," rents, and teachers the kids to ride in an hour or so. This happened again today, with LeiYana, who rented bikes while staying at Lansdowne Resort, and the kids were riding in a flash. Their scooter experience helped.

Thank you to all of our customers over the past 13 years. On this Thanksgiving, we reflect on times when bike rental revenue was of paramount importance to my family -- times when we had special needs -- and you got us through...and we are thankful.

We have made many friends through the business, and we appreciate all the support you have given us...we are thankful.

This year is so different than any other. Like the bikes? Well, these masks are custom hand-made by a neighbor of mine, and like the "Bikes for Good" bike reconditioning Tom does for charity, proceeds from.these masks also support charity. If you want one of the bike pattern masks, a coffee pattern mask, or some other adjustable mask pattern, with removable nose piece, they are available for $10.00 each (plus $1.00 per order for mailing, if mailing is required)...on behalf of the charities we have supported, we will be thankful.

Several people have rented bikes and gone across Whites Ferry, to ride up to Monacacy Aqueduct, shown here. It is the longest Aqueduct on the C&O Canal, with seven arches. Enroute, you also pass the Lockhouse 26 foundation and the state of MD's largest oak tree, as well as Lockhouse 27. There is a long watered stretch of Canal with fish, frogs, and birds, like blue heron.

Families can get out and go too! Melissa brought her daughter, twin sister, Melinda and her son, Nico, Jennie and Katherine, for a family group outing on Saturday, May 16th. They used the full compliment of hybrid bicycles, Trail-a-Bike and Burley trailer, and explored the nearby (1 mile) W&OD trail.

Unlike gyms and fitness centers, as an outdoor activity small busuness, we do not need to be closed, however, we too will practice social distancing (a.k.a. "NO DRAFTING"), and here is how.

* We will clean your rental bike and lock it with those of up to two other people in your household group, but away from other groups.
* We will leave you the lock code and paperwork, plus a cleaned pen.
* You complete the paperwork, sign the waiver, insert exact cash payment into the envelope, or Venmo the funds to us (credit card payment for +$3 or +3%, whichever is more), and drop it in the payment box.
* You ride, return, and lock the bikes.
* We clean them for the next use.

ANY bike in the rental fleet, for up to 4 hours.

(ANY bike in the rental fleet for up to 24 hrs. for just $25)

The W&OD Trail, the nearest bicycle rail trail to us advised today that it is still open and allowed to be used, and the Park Service etiquette/rules, which we have copied, because our business can't share their post.

We also decided that, instead of washing bikes only when they got really dirty, to soap and water clean all bikes (and our hands) after each use. These five are ready for tomorrow's use.

If you want to rent bikes, we can prepare bikes and helmets for human interaction-free payment, retrieval, use, and return. Call ahead 571-572-BIKE(2453).

Many of NOVA Parks trails are still open for our guests to use. However, we would like to provide the following recommendations for trail users on observing social distancing minimums.

✔️Follow CDC’s guidance on personal hygiene prior to heading to trails — wash hands, carry hand sanitizer, do not use trails if you have symptoms, cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, etc.
✔️Observe at all times CDC’s minimum recommended social distancing of six feet from other people. Practice it and know what it looks like. Keep it as you walk, bike or hike.
✔️Warn other trail users of your presence and as you pass to allow proper distance and step off trails to allow others to pass, keeping minimum recommended distances at all times. Signal your presence with your voice, bell or horn.
✔️Note--NOVA Parks public restrooms are closed — be prepared before you leave and time outings so that you are not dependent on public restrooms.
✔️Bring water or drinks — public drinking fountains should not be used.
✔️Bring a suitable trash bag. Leave no trash, take everything out to protect park workers.
✔️Please respect posted trail closures due to conditions or other considerations in order to protect the trails for longevity.
✔️Remember to keep your dogs on leash- it’s the law.
